The start to the season was inconsistent. The first three matches ended in a draw and Real Madrid fell to twelfth place. Then they won five straight games and won the Super Cup against Barcelona in the meantime. After the first quarter of the campaign was over they climbed to the first spot of the table.

The second leg started with the unfortunate events at El Sadar which forced the game to be suspended after 46 minutes of play, when Osasuna were defeating Real Madrid 1-0. The rest of the match was played months later in Zaragoza and ended with a 1-1 draw. The visit to Barcelona also ended in a draw and Real Madrid were getting nearer to winning the championship as weeks went by. On Matchday 35 they grabbed the title after defeating Espanyol at the Bernabeu. They had only lost one game in the tournament and, to wrap it all up, they won the Copa del Rey against Valladolid.
