The previous coach had done an extraordinary job and had left a strongly built team. His successor, Vujadin Boskov, continued along these lines and repeated success in the league tournament.
The squad was renewed combining signings of famous players, such as Laurie Cunningham, and talented Spanish players like Angel, Portugal, Miguel and Rincon. Also, Jose Antonio Camacho, one of the most important players in the history of the Club, rejoined the team after recovering from a very serious injury.
The road to the title wasn’t easy. This campaign saw the rise of a new contender, Real Sociedad, which had spent the previous years building a good team and steadily climbing towards the top of the table. The first two matches were a 3-1 victory against Valencia and a 2-1 road victory against Rayo Vallecano. Then came the Clasico. In a spectacular game, the Whites defeated Barcelona 3-2. The tournament became an intense fight between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. The first clash between them took place in Week 9 and Real Sociedad, who hadn’t yet defeated the Whites in the league tournament, performed a heroic deed and overcame the Whites at Atocha 4-0. It was their first defeated in the season.
The second leg started with a 2-0 defeat against Valencia. They didn’t lose any more games in the rest of the season and won the title with one week left in the tournament. They became the top-scoring team after netting 70 goals, 26 more than Real Sociedad, who finished one point behind them in the table. The team from San Sebastian would win the league title the following two years.
