After a catastrophic season, Miguel Muñoz was dismissed as coach and substituted by Miljan Miljanic. The league campaign was spectacular; Real Madrid won the title twelve points ahead of the runners-up.
After spending twenty-five years at the Club –fourteen of them as coach–, Miguel Muñoz left Real Madrid alongside emblematic player Ignacio Zoco. The latter was given a well-deserved tribute match which also served as the presentation of new signings Paul Breitner, Roberto Martinez and Uria.
Miljanic brought excitement back to the fans. The debut against Valencia was a 2-1 victory which confirmed the expectancy created around the team. The first defeat, against Athletic Bilbao in Week 14, was followed by twelve games without tasting defeat. The Whites took the final point they needed to grab the title against Real Sociedad when there were still five games left in the competition.
Three years later, Real Madrid had added yet another league title to their trophy room. They became the top-scoring (66 strikes) and second least scored-upon side (34). Miljan Miljanic also led the team to victory in the Spanish Cup. The Yugoslavian era had begun.
