This season would bring confirmation that the new generation of Madridistas could be trusted to maintain the winning spirit the Club had showcased during the decade.
Argentinean Miguel Perez was the only novelty on the squad in this campaign. The season kicked-off with a hard-fought away victory against Sevilla. Contenders for the title this year would be Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Las Palmas. Despite a successful first leg, the Whites finished in second place behind Atletico, who couldn’t keep up the pace during the second half of the campaign.
The team showcased brilliant football which brought excellent results despite occasional draws at the Bernabeu. With four games to go, Real Madrid visited the Camp Nou eager to prove they were top contenders for championship. There was a feeling the new champion would be the victorious team in the Clasico. The game was played on a Tuesday due to the death by food poisoning of Barcelona player Benitez three days before. The Catalans, therefore, had double motivation for winning. Zaldua scored the opening goal for Barça just 12 minutes into the game. Pirri scored the equaliser on the 43-minute mark. Real Madrid had taken a big step towards the title, which they grabbed by defeating Las Palmas 2-1 with one game to go. Junquera became the least scored-upon goalie and won the Zamora Trophy.
