By now, Real Madrid had won ten league titles, more than any other Spanish club. This season’s would become the fifth consecutive title, thus establishing a new record and allowing the Club to retain the cup on site for the second time in their history.

Di Stefano’s farewell had shocked Madridismo, but the signing of several young players gave the team great potential. Amongst others, Pirri, Sanchis, Morollon, De Felipe and Grosso joined the Club. The latter had been loaned to Atletico Madrid the previous campaign. They joined other young members already on the squad in what would become the legendary ‘groovy’ Real Madrid of the 1960s.

The first game, to be played on 13 September, faced Real Madrid and Espanyol, who had recently signed Di Stefano. Real Madrid players cheerfully greeted their former team-mate before the match, which rather than showcase good football, proved to be a very tense affair. Real Madrid’s victory by 2-1 was soon followed by two consecutive thrashings (6-0 against Las Palmas and 6-1 against Cordoba). These results brought hope to fans and silenced their initial doubts. The Whites jumped to first place on Matchday 10. The second leg turned out to be a close contest between Real Madrid and Atletico. The championship remained undecided until the penultimate game, in which the Whites defeated Athletic Bilbao and won their fifth straight title. The Madridistas achieved yet another record at the end of the campaign; they became the all-time least scored-upon side in La Liga (18 strikes).
