The team, which had now added Dominguez and Santamaria to the payroll, had a very successful season renewing the league title and winning the European Cup for a third consecutive time.

The new signings counterbalanced the loss of charismatic key players who were now getting old: Perez Paya, Molowny and Navarro. The preseason was controversial. The relationship between the coach members was tense and the Club decided to dismiss Villalonga and put the Argentinean Luis Carniglia in his place. However, this didn’t seem to affect the team, which had a stunning performance at the start of the season: they took the first spot on Matchday 2 and won the first three games, netting eleven goals and conceding none. The first defeat didn’t arrive until Matchday 9, against Sporting Gijon, a team which had earned a reputation for pulling stunning upsets over far superior teams.

The second leg again happened to be a close fight between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. The Whites lost to Osasuna and relinquished the first position. After defeating Valencia by a close margin they attained a much celebrated victory at Camp Nou. Marsal and Rial scored the goals which would definitely leave Barcelona out of the contest. With two games to go, Real Madrid stood in first place, three points ahead of Atletico, and there was a derby coming up at Metropolitano Stadium. Atletico still had a chance if they won the game, but the Whites resisted. It was a 1-1 draw and Real Madrid clinched yet another league title. The end to a fabulous season was winning the third European Cup by defeating Milan 3-2.
