Stars such as Hector Rial had left the team, but that didn’t keep Real Madrid from renewing the title. The first half of the season was almost perfect and compensated for the inconsistent second leg.
Real Madrid won the first four games, jumped to first place and remained undefeated until Matchday 9, when they were upset by an underdog in a game that the media described as a heroic deed. The players’ morale didn’t suffer and they continued to showcase extraordinary results. It wasn’t until the last game of the first leg that they tasted defeat again. They proved to be the strongest team and everything seemed set for a new Real Madrid title.
However, no one predicted the bad patch that laid ahead through the second half of the season. They struggled game after game and Barcelona closed the gap. Finally, with just three matches to go, the Catalans lost against Mallorca and Real Madrid were mathematically proclaimed champions.
Every line of the team performed great, but it would be unfair not to highlight the defense formed by Araquistain, Isidro, Miera, Santamaria and Pachin, which only conceded 24 goals, 22 less than Barcelona. Ferenc Puskas was the team’s top scorer.
