This championship meant the third title for Real Madrid and the start of a new era in Spanish football, and Alfredo di Stefano played a major role in both matters. The Club tasted triumph again after a titleless period which seemed like an eternity to Madridistas. A long run of trophies would soon compensate for this break.

Before this season, two events had taken place which were to have enormous impact on the Club. First of all, Santiago Bernabeu became President ten years earlier and had been steadily building what would eventually become the most successful team in history. The second event was the signing of the best player of all time: Alfredo di Stefano.

Real Madrid had a brilliant start to the tournament winning the first five games with authority. On Matchday 6 they were defeated by Deportivo La Coruña, missing Navarro and Di Stefano for the game. The Whites thrashed Barcelona 5-0 the follwing week.

The duel with the Catalans during the second leg was heart-stopping. On 18 April 1954 Real Madrid won the tournament by defeating Valencia 4-0 with one game to go.
