Darjus Lavrinovic, Real Madrid's latest basketball signing, was born in Vilnius on 1 November 1979. He started his career at Alytus Alita, making his professional debut in 1996. He stayed there until 2003. Lavrinovic signed for Zalgiris Kaunas in 2004 and began fighting for titles with his new team. He soon won a Baltic League and two Lithuanian league titles in two seasons.
He failed to win a title in the 2005/06 season, his last at the club, despite having his best performances; he led the rebound rankings of the Lithuanian and Baltic leagues, and was the top blocker in the Euroleague. This earned him a spot on the second Ideal Five of the latter competition.
Lavrinovic signed for Unics Kazan in 2006, remaining there for two seasons but failing to win any titles. He won the Silver Medal in the 2007 Eurobasket with Lithuania, averaging 6.5 points and 3 rebounds per game. Dynamo Moscow was his next and last team before signing for Real Madrid. He averaged 8.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 16 minutes of playing time on the Russian team.
