Sunday 24 August will always be rememebered as the day in which Real Madrid heroically defeated Valencia 4-2 in the second leg of Spanish Super Cup when they were two men down. It will also be remembered as the day in which youth system player Rubén de la Red scored an amazing 25-meter goal; a true work of art that mirrored the strike scored by former youth system player Santiago Aragón 18 years ago.
De la Red is back with a vengeance. The player is determined to triumph at Real Madrid after his successful year at Getafe and winning the Euro 2008, during which he scored a great goal against Greece.
When Rubén scored on Sunday, many Madridistas surely remembered the strike netted in 1990 by then youth system player Santi Aragón against Barcelona. "I decided to shoot from such a distance because back then Barcelona's defence and goalkeeper were positioned more forward than usual," remebers Aragón, "I saw my chance, took it and scored."
Like Rubén, Santi also scored in the return leg of the Spanish Super Cup between the eternal rivals. The Whites had previously won in Barcelona 1-0 thanks to a goal by Míchel in the second half. They defeated Barça 4-1 in the return leg, with strikes from Butragueño (2), Hugo Sánchez and Aragón himself. "My professional career had just begun and I have very fond memories of the Super Cup," continues Aragón, "I was very happy with my goal and for winning one of the first titles of my career."
Rubén de la Red entered Real Madrid history on Sunday with his perfect shot against Valencia. "He has a very promising future," says Aragón, "He's shown his talent since he was very little and he is proving to be a great football player. He is young and more physical than I ever was. He has skill and a simple way of looking at football. He has a bright future ahead of him."
