The Santiago Bernabéu Trophy, which honours the man who was a player, Technical Secretary, coach and President at Real Madrid, turns 30 this year. Three decades of football, stars, goals and living and past legends that will never be forgotten. The entire football world is invited to the party.
The 2008 Santiago Bernabéu Trophy is set to take place on 27 August. Each year, this match gathers Madridistas of all generations together to honour the memory of Don Santiago. Thorughout its history, the Trophy has witnessed the power and drive of men like Santillana, Del Bosque, Camacho and Juan Gómez "Juanito". It witnessed the birth of the glorious Quinta del Buitre and praised the talent of legends such as Schuster, Fernando Redondo and Zinedine Zidane. It is now time for the present and future of the Club to shine against Sporting Lisboa.
The prestige of the competition has been enhanced further by the team's that have participated in it. Sides like Arrigo Sacchi's Milan in 1988 and 1990, Louis van Gaal's legendary Ajax, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. The list is much longer, comprising historical teams such as Benfica, Liverpool, Everton, Palmeiras, Peñarol, Santos, River Plate and Partizan Belgrade.
Real Madrid have won the Trophy 18 times, the last in December 2007 by defeating Partizan 2-0. Bayern Munich follow in the ranking with three victories, while Milan and Inter Milan have two each.
Beginnings
The death of Don Santiago on 2 June 1978 was a harsh blow to all Madridismo. One year later, following the petition of a voting Club Member, the General Assembly approved the creation of a Trophy named after the recently deceased President. Since ten, thousands of fans at the stadium and millions at their homes get together to honour his memory once a year. The stadium should once again be packed to honour the man who established Real Madrid as a legendary club.
