In 1960, 127,000 spectators filled Hampden Park and watched Real Madrid conquer their fifth straight European Cup with a 7-3 whipping of Eintracht Frankfurt; all seven goals scored by Puskas and Alfredo di Stéfano.
On Tuesday, Real Madrid will relive what resulted in the club's fifth European Cup as it squares off against Eintracht Frankfurt. "It was a fabulous final. Puskas and Di Stéfano scored all the goals even though [Eintracht Frankfurt] went ahead on the scoreboard. Real Madrid was accustomed to overcoming adversity, especially when it had monsters like Puskas and Di Stéfano," recalls Paco Gento about the "best final of all time."
The match took a turn for the worst when Eintracht took the early lead. "We were losing and the crossbar prevented them from scoring again. We then managed to level and take the lead, but we still wanted more goals," says di Stéfano.
What those who participated in the epic match will never forget was the victory lap. According to Gento, "We were an ambicious team. It was a tremendous match. Everyone asked us to return to the pitch to applaud the fans. It was a moment we will never forget."
For club president Ramón Calderón, the 1959/60 Real Madrid "set the standard. It was a team that always sought excellence on and off the pitch. I believe they are an example to follow."
