While visiting the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday, Emilio Butragueño had time to meet with Realmadrid.com, to whom he insisted Iker Casillas should win the Balon d'Or. He also commented on his days as a Spanish international and what it meant to see Spain with the European Championship.
Iker is on track to win the Balon d'Or. What are your thoughts?
Tradition dictates that only forwards with the award. But Iker Casillas' is a special goalkeeper, not just this year, but throughout his career; he's decisive. The fact that he's a European champion and the role he played in the quarterfinals make him deserve it more than anyone. His output since his first day with the first team has been spectacular. He must win the Balon d'Or. He has saved Real Madrid on numerous occasions and he's astonishingly consistent. He's the best goalkeeper in the world. Those that vote have to take all this into account.
How did you feel seeing Spain with Euro 2008?
I was overjoyed. I was overcome with emotions in the quarterfinal against Italy. It meant a lot. It was a pyschological barrier that weighed heavily on Spain, but they managed to overcome it. That was the boost they needed to win the competition.
You must have vivid memories.
I played in Euro 1988 and four years earlier was present but didn't play. There's nothing better than representing your country in such a meaningful competition. The World Cup is the apex, but the Euro is very important, too. It was magnificent for this country and for our football. I hope it's the start of a new era full of title success.
Having four Madridistas on the all-star team really says a lot.
It's a given that Real Madrid players should always be among the best in the world. It doesn't come as a surprise. It's quite normal and a reason to be proud.
How is life treating you?
Great. I am very lucky. I still have close ties to football, but I try to spend as much time as I can with my family and kids.
