With the deal all but finalized, Pepe Sánchez spoke to Realmadrid.com from his home in Argentina. "The possibility to play for Madrid came up and I didn't have to think twice," said the player.
What does signing a contract with Real Madrid mean to you?
It’s a very special time for me. To play for Real Madrid is a privilege. It’s a very special situation considering where I am in my career because it’s one of the few times I really know where I will be playing next season. We’re still in early July and I know I will be playing for Real Madrid, one of the greatest basketball clubs around.
Despite having won so many titles and accolades, you've been described as a natural winner always after another victory.
I always look to improve and I work hard to continue winning, and that’s exactly what I can do for Real Madrid, a winning team always in the hunt. Real Madrid has given me this opportunity and I am very grateful. It’s a great club with a great squad and coaching staff, and the fans are simply extraordinary. Standing side by side will be a real pleasure.
You had several offers on the table. Did it take long to make a decision?
It all happened so fast. The possibility to play for Madrid came up and I didn’t have to think twice. My agent explained the situation and it was taken care of in no time, although I immediately knew that this was what I wanted. I want to play for Real Madrid, and Antonio Martín, Alberto Herreros, and Joan Plaza have all told me that they are counting on me. I, of course, feel the same way, and I believe this is the ideal way to begin working with a new team.
What do you think you can contribute to this team?
I have always tried to bring out the best in my teammates, which is what I feel best describes me. I have never stood out for individual reasons, nor have I ever thought I am the best point guard around. Players should always try to bring out the best in those around them and to be an extension of the coach on the court.
You will join Raül López and Sergio Llull as the third point guard on the team. This could be one of the ACB's deadliest trios.
I think we’ve got the point guard position well-covered. Raül López is an extraordinary player. I think he’s at the top of his game, which is why he’s been asked to play for Spain in the Olympics. Sergio Llull has terrific potential and since he joined Real Madrid has shown just how good he can be. I will try to contribute my experience and my service, and I will do whatever it takes to help my team win. I think we’re a versatile group of point guards.
Having retired from the national team, this is the first long summer you've had in quite a while.
I have more time to rest and recover for this new season with Real Madrid by not playing for my national team. I am just enjoying the moment, but I will admit that I am looking forward to starting work on this new project.
Is there anything you would like to say to Real Madrid fans?
I would say that I am very excited, anxious to have fun to help the team, and title-hungry. I will be surrounded by great players with winning attitudes. I am familiar with the fans thanks to the games I played as a visitor, and they are incredible. They always stand by their team, which is priceless for the players. We will try to make them as happy as possible throughout the season.
Can we expect to see you watching football at the Santiago Bernabéu next season?
I’m not just a football fan, I’m a fanatic. I have football running through my veins like all good Argentines. I hope to attend many games in the Santiago Bernabéu so I can soak in the atmosphere and see Real Madrid play.
