Ricardo Zamnora happened to be the coach who gave Vicente Traín the chance of making his debut in the First Division back in 1955. He played for Real Madrid for five years, winning four league titles, one Cup of Spain and the Zamora Trophy. He was runner-up in the European Cup twice with the Whites and was an international for Spain. He is a close friend of Alfredo di Stéfano and an honourary member of the Club's Association of Veterans.
1. Why does Iker Casillas deserve the trophy?
He had a great season and I believe he even saved the team with some of his saves. His hard work and excellent quality make him deserve the Zamora.
2. What are his best attributes?
I think he is best at one-on-ones and that his reflexes are incredible. I sometimes wonder how he manages to save some shots. He is a great example of the excellent stock of keepers that the youth system at the Club produces. He had his chance to shine and took it, while other great keepers have had to leave the team. Diego López is a fantastic goalie, but it is very hard to be a starter when Casillas is on the squad.
3. Can you picture Casillas winning a Ballon d'Or?
I wish, but I think it is very difficult. He may be up for an international award if, adding to the great season he had, Spain gets far in the Euro and he stands out in the competition. I nevertheless would like to stress that I believe it to be very complicated.
4. Who do you think is the best keeper in the history of Real Madrid?
That’s a hard decision to make. Real Madrid has always been an attacking team and goalkeepers sometimes suffer in counterattacks. We all know Casillas is currently the best keeper in Spain and possibly in the world.
5. What does winning the Zamora mean to a keeper?
It is beautiful to win the trophy, but you do so thanks to the entire team’s hard work, especially the defenders’.
