Despite not being a Club member, Rafael Sánchez-Guerra was elected President of Real Madrid with a great majority of the votes on 31 May 1935. Not being a member combined with the fact that he also held political office during the 2nd Republic made right-wing members complain about his Presidency and even threaten the mortgage the Club was still paying for the plot where the stadium had been built.
Sánchez-Guerra’s goals included finding a more respectable headquarters for the Club building a new stadium, either on the grounds of Chamartín or somewhere else. The new headquarters was established in a large flat near Cibeles Fountain and new players like Lecue, Kellemen and Alberty were signed. The start of the Civil War ended his plans of building a new stadium on Alcalá Street.
During his short office as President, Real Madrid won the Spanish Cup against Barcelona in 1936. A Committee led by Juan José Vallejo, President of the Working-class Sports Federation, replaced Sánchez-Guerra in the Presidency.
