Sergio Ramos: "People will talk about us this year and we will win many titles"

Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

In an interview to EFE, Sergio Ramos was self-critical with his performance in the Spain-USA semifinal of the Confederations Cup.

You must be disappointed about not reaching the final with Spain.

These things happen in sport. I felt comfortable in the semifnal, but I made a mistake after I had chances on goal. Everything would have been different if I had scored. I was unlucky, but I must move on and work hard.

You were playing very well in the Confederations Cup.

I was happy with my performances and with how fit I felt, but then I made a mistake.

Why didn’t you clear the ball?

I honestly didn’t notice I had an opponent behind me when I controlled the ball. It was a mistake, but I’ll use it to improve. I don’t like to simply clear the ball without thinking about where I’m sending it, but I also know a defender has to be decisive, especially inside his own box.

Why did you control the ball inside the opponent’s box when you could have just shot on target?

Because Riera’s cross deflected on a defender. It was harder to just shoot. I decided to control the ball, but a centre back intercepted it.

Your contributions in attack draw criticism towards your defensive duties.

I respect everybody’s criticism as long as it centres on sport. I don’t like personal criticism or persecution. People change their opinion on the team when a defeat like yesterday’s takes place. I can only do my best on the pitch. No one can criticise me for not trying my best.

You’ve looked happier and more open recently. When did you decide to make a change?

You always learn from the good moments you have, but you learn even more from the bad ones. I had many in a very short time and they helped me think about stuff and make a change. I hope to keep it up until I retire.

Did you need the atmosphere on the national team to feel happy?

I’ve always been happy on a personal level. Everyone who knows me knows I’m always happy.

Is it hard to come to grips with fame when you are so young?

A professional football player always aspires to be what we are now. I am proud of being a role model for kids that train to become footballers someday. I accept what I am for better and for worse.

Are you excited about the new Real Madrid?

I don’t have enough words to thank the current President because he was the one who signed me and changed my life. The fans are excited about the project. There will be signings throughout the summer and Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka are world stars that will do much for the team. People will talk about us and we will win many titles.

You were Florentino Perez’s first Spanish signing. He’s now signed Raul Albiol.

I am very happy for him because he is a fantastic player and a great guy. He is going to help out a lot. He is one of the most humble players I know. This is a reward for everything he went through after his accident. His efforts at Getafe and Valencia put him where he is right now. He is a fast centre back that knows exactly where he should be at all times.

How will Cristiano Ronaldo fit in the squad?

There will be no trouble. I’ve talked to former team-mates of his and they all say he is a normal guy that makes a difference. We will help him adapt quickly to the team.
