This is Jerzey Dudek's second season at Real Madrid. The keeper will probably be a starter against Real Unión tonight and told Marca he is ready to play.
The King’s Cup is back and you’ll probably play. How do you feel?
I feel great! I will be happy if the coach decides I should play because it is a privilege to do so for Real Madrid. I’m ready. I don’t get many chances to play and that makes me work even harder every day. Casillas is the starter keeper, but I should always be ready. This club is very demanding to all of us.
Is it very hard to keep fit knowing you practically have no chances of playing?
Yes, that’s why I have to train so hard. I do extra work every day. I work out in the gym before each training session and do more field exercises when the session is over. I think I look quite well for a 35 year old.
Is this week more special?
No... The pre-season was more special because I played in practically every game and felt like a true number ‘1’ goalie. I enjoyed myself immensely because I knew I probably wouldn’t play any more once Casillas returned from his holiday. I was very happy during that time and my confidence soared because I performed very well and proved I can play for this team whenever it needs me. This week is naturally different because I may get the chance to play. I try to be more concentrated these days and to recover the habits I used to have before each match. I’m excited but calm at the same time.
If they forced you to chose, which would you prefer, the Champions League or the King’s Cup?
I prefer the Champions League, even if I don’t play a single minute. It is a spectacular competition. There is nothing more important than that tournament. I had the chance of winning the title once and nothing can compare with the feeling you get. I won with Liverpool and stood out during the final because I saved two penalties. It was one of the best moments in my life and I would like to lift that cup again, even If I don’t play.
Do you think Real Madrid has a strong enough team to win the Champions League?
Sure! We have a quality squad and we are one of the favourite teams. We just need a little luck. The difference between the greatest teams in the tournament is usually luck.
Do you like the competition system of the King’s Cup?
I do because it favours us, but I understand fans’ preference for a single game in each round. The English FA Cup is like that until the competition reaches the quarterfinals stage. The system favours smaller teams and allows more room for spectacle. It’s more exciting despite the fact that bigger teams are quite hurt by it. I nevertheless think the English system is very good. Nowadays, in case both teams draw, the tie break takes place at the bigger team’s stadium. It used to go into added time and even into a penalty shoot-out back in the day.
What do you expect of the match with Real Unión?
It won’t be easy. I guess it will be similar to last year’s games with Alicante. It’s always hard to play against northern teams. We’ll have to watch out! We will have to fight hard for a victory. They’ll destroy us if we think it will be a walk in the park.
Do you understand the coach’s decision to use Casillas in every game?
Yes, I do. The same thing happened to me when I was Iker’s age. I only missed one match. I didn’t train for two or three days if I sustained any niggles and always made it to the game. That’s life. Casillas also happens to be an incredible goalie, which makes things even harder. He is one of the best keepers in the world and a Real Madrid symbol. It’s sometimes tough not to play because you feel you haven’t helped the team. You experience important victories from the outset; you’re happy, but it’s not the same. But this also happens to the other players who’ve missed the match.
You always seem to be happy...
Because I am. I’m here to help and I’m sure I’ll eventually get some chances to play. The atmosphere is great on the team and we all feel important. There’s always someone willing to help me. We are all equally important in the dressing room.
Will this be your last season at Real Madrid?
I don’t know. It’s still too soon to know what will happen. My contract will end in June, but the season has just begun. I’m very happy here. This is the best club in the world and it would make me very sad to leave. I think I can play for at least another three years. My wife and kids are happy here. I always spent at least five years on my previous teams and I would like to remain here longer.
