Real Madrid 1-1 Olympique Lyonnais

Alberto Navarro / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

The Champions League was unfair with Real Madrid once again. The Whites had more than ten chances on goal, but Olympique Lyonnais were more effective. Pjanic's goal equalised the score following Ronaldo's opener. The Madridistas dominated the match and deserved to reach the next round.

Real Madrid put a siege on Olympique's goal during the first 30 minutes of the match. They moved the ball at their will and needed just five minutes to break Lloris' 620-minute undefeated run through Cristiano Ronaldo. Guti controlled the ball in midfield and served a perfect assist with his left foot to the Portuguese player, whose speed and effectiveness resulted in a goal by nutmegging Lloris.

Kaka had a chance to score the team's first goal in the first minute from a one-on-one, but the goalkeeper won the day. The Brazilian had a chance again on the 10-minute mark after beautifully dribbling past Reveillere (with a nutmeg) and Cris, but his shot hit the keeper.

Cristiano Ronaldo had several more chances and Higuain's were even better. The Argentine dribbled past Lloris following an assist by Granero, but his shot on the empty goal hit the near post (26’). The keeper's reflexes saved the day by stopping a shot by Higuain from inside the small box a few minutes later (28’).

The match didn't change much after half-time. Kallstrom and Gonalons came on for Boumsong and Makoun. Puel hoped to deepen his team's attack by making use of the Swede's left foot and it nearly paid off when Kallstrom passed the ball on the goal-line to Govou, who sent it over the crossbar (49´). Minutes later, Van der Vaart replaced Granero (61’).

Real Madrid never ceased trying to net more strikes, but they kept stumbling on the fierce French defence. Pjanic took advantage of a series of clearances in the local box, controlling the ball with one of his thighs and scoring with his left foot (76’). The goal only drew the match, but it gave Lyonnais a ticket to the next round.
