Whites earn impressive victory in Italy, but Gescrap's victory over Unicaja eliminates them from the Euroleague

Edu Bueno / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Real Madrid used all their guns to try and make it to the Euroleague playoffs. Led by an impressive Reyes (17 points, 14 rebounds, 30 PIR), they defeated Montepaschi in Siena, hoping for a Gescrap defeat in Malaga that didn't happen, but nearly did (55-59).

The Madridistas were focused and composed in the opening minutes. Suarez, Llull and Mirotic scored their first points, while McCalebb responded with four three-pointers in the opening minutes. A back and forth ensued, with both sides netting baskets that eclipsed all defensive aspects of the game.

This did not favour Madrid, and the mobility of local centres, Tomas Ress in particular (three three-pointers), maladjusted the visiting defence (48-41). Real were doing a good job and didn't despiar despite local efficiency from the three-point line (8/10). Pocius and Reyes came on and upped the intensity of the clash. The team had four brilliant defensive efforts thanks to the excellent work of Reyes and Tomic, and it also banked ten points. They had a 5-11 run that would have given them the lead had it not been for a Rakocevic three-pointer just before half-time (53-52).

The Madridistas went all out in the second half. Both sides were imprecise in the first few minutes, but Laso's boys stepped up thanks to a great Begic (56-62, 24'). Moss also pulled rank and led his team to neutralise Mirotic's points, but Real nevertheless kept in the lead (75-76).

The Whites had a 2-12 run that gave them their largest cushion yet (77-88). The locals tried to fight back, but Madrid's defence thwarted their offence. Even thought they already knew Gescrap had won in Malaga, Real Madrid kept fighting and earned an impressive final score (90-102).
